Bipolar Mood Disorder involves distinct episodes with different symptoms:
• Manic (High) Episodes: During mania or hypomania, a person may feel unusually happy, energetic, or restless. They may have racing thoughts, rapid speech, and impulsive or risky behaviors (such as excessive spending or reckless driving). Common symptoms include decreased need for sleep, grandiose ideas, distractibility, and unusually high goal-directed activity. In severe cases, mania may include delusions or hallucinations.
• Depressive (Low) Episodes: Depressive phases involve profound sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness. Individuals may lose interest in activities they once enjoyed, feel tired or lethargic, and have difficulty concentrating. Physical symptoms can include changes in appetite or sleep (sleeping too much or too little) and slowed movements. Feelings of worthlessness, excessive guilt, anxiety, or recurrent thoughts of death or suicide can also occur.
