Urinary stones in Kidney, Ureter and Bladder

Urinary stones are hard deposits of minerals and salts that form in the kidneys and can travel down the ureter to the bladder. This common condition (also called kidney stones or urinary calculi) affects many adults in Dubai. When a stone blocks the flow of urine or irritates the urinary tract, it can cause intense pain or blood in the urine.

Several factors contribute to urinary stone formation. Not drinking enough water (especially in the hot UAE climate) can concentrate the urine, allowing minerals to crystallize into stones. Diet and genetics also play a role – high salt or protein intake and certain metabolic conditions can increase the risk. Urinary stones are treatable. Our Urology Department in Dubai offers comprehensive care from diagnosis through treatment and prevention to relieve your discomfort and protect your kidney health.

Common symptoms

  • A stone in a kidney or ureter typically causes severe pain in the side and back (flank pain) radiating to the lower abdomen or groin. A stone in the bladder may cause lower abdominal pain and difficulty urinating. Common symptoms of urinary stones include:

  •

    • Intense pain: Sudden, sharp pain usually below the ribs in the side/back, sometimes spreading to the groin. The pain often comes in waves (renal colic).
    • Urinary problems: Burning during urination, a frequent urgent need to go, or difficulty passing urine despite the urge.
    • Blood in urine: Urine that appears pink, red, or brown – a sign of bleeding caused by a stone.
    • Fever and chills: These may occur if an infection is present along with the stone.

  • If you experience any of these symptoms, seek prompt medical evaluation.

Diagnosis

To confirm a diagnosis of urinary stones and plan the right treatment, our urologists use advanced diagnostic tests.

Diagnostic tests may include:

  • Imaging studies: Ultrasound or low-dose CT scans to visualize stones and pinpoint their size and location. In some cases, a simple abdominal X-ray (KUB) can help detect certain stones.
  • Lab tests: Urinalysis checks for blood or crystal particles (signs of a stone) and can include a urine culture to identify infection. Blood tests measure substances such as calcium or uric acid in your blood.
  • Stone analysis: If you pass a stone, analyzing its composition in a lab helps determine the cause and guides specific preventive measures

Treatment

Treatment for urinary stones depends on the stone’s size, location, type, and your symptoms. Our urology specialists in Dubai will recommend the most effective and least invasive approach for your situation.

Available treatments include:

  • Conservative management: Many small stones will pass on their own with time. We help you manage this process with pain relief, plenty of fluids to flush out the stone, and sometimes medications to relax the urinary tract and ease stone passage.
  • Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL): A non-surgical therapy that uses focused shock waves to break a kidney stone into tiny fragments. It’s an outpatient procedure. The fragmented pieces then pass naturally in your urine over the next week or so.
  • Ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy: For stones that won’t pass on their own (especially those stuck in the ureter), a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure can remove them. A thin scope (ureteroscope) is inserted through the urethra and bladder to reach the stone. The urologist can then either extract the stone or use a laser to break it into smaller pieces – all without any incision. A similar approach via a cystoscope is used to remove stones in the bladder.
  • Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL): For very large or complex kidney stones, we perform a minor surgical procedure called PCNL. The surgeon makes a small (keyhole) incision in your back and inserts instruments directly into the kidney to break up and remove the stone.

Thanks to modern technology, open surgery is now rarely needed for stone removal. Our team of expert urologists in Dubai are truly specialized urinary stones removal doctors, with extensive experience in the latest techniques. We prioritize your comfort and aim for high success rates. Whether it’s a simple outpatient procedure or a more complex surgery, you will receive care with state-of-the-art technology.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How can I prevent urinary stones from forming?

The best prevention is to stay well-hydrated and make some diet and lifestyle adjustments. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day (especially in Dubai’s hot climate) keeps your urine diluted so minerals don’t crystallize easily. Adjusting your diet can also reduce your risk – for example, cutting down on salt and animal protein, and moderating high-oxalate foods (like spinach). It’s also important to maintain a healthy weight and address any underlying health issues. In some cases, doctors may prescribe medications to help prevent specific types of stones.

Leaving a stone untreated can lead to serious complications. A stone that completely blocks the flow of urine can cause the kidney to swell (hydronephrosis), which can eventually damage the kidney if not relieved. Also, trapped urine behind a blockage can become infected – leading to urinary or kidney infections. Additionally, an untreated stone often causes recurring flare-ups of pain or infection. It’s safest to treat the stone promptly and avoid these risks.

It depends on the stone’s size and the treatment approach. A small stone might pass naturally in a few days to a couple of weeks. With medical intervention, relief is much faster. Shock wave lithotripsy breaks the stone apart, and the fragments usually clear out within about a week. With ureteroscopy, the stone is removed on the spot, giving immediate relief. In general, recovery is quick – most patients resume normal activities within a day or two after these treatments.
