Turbinectomy

Breathing freely through your nose is easy to take for granted – until chronic congestion makes every inhale a challenge. If you’re an adult struggling with constant nasal blockage due to enlarged turbinates, turbinectomy at HealthHub Clinics in Dubai can help you breathe easier again. Our experienced ENT specialists combine cutting-edge medical expertise with compassionate care to gently reduce excess turbinate tissue and restore clear nasal airflow. We focus on your comfort and safety at every step, helping you get relief from congestion in the most effective way possible.

What Is Turbinectomy?

Turbinectomy is a surgical procedure to reduce the size of the nasal turbinates – small structures inside your nose that humidify and filter the air. When turbinates become chronically enlarged (a condition called turbinate hypertrophy), they can cause persistent nasal blockage and stuffiness. This often happens due to chronic nasal allergies (allergic rhinitis), long-term sinus inflammation, or even a deviated septum. Medications like nasal sprays may only provide temporary relief if the turbinates stay swollen. Turbinectomy (also known as turbinate reduction surgery) addresses the root cause by removing or shrinking the excess turbinate tissue to open your nasal passages and improve airflow. For adults who have tried medications but still have chronic nasal obstruction due to turbinate hypertrophy, a turbinectomy can provide lasting relief and significantly improve quality of life.

Types of Turbinectomy Procedures

At HealthHub, we offer a range of turbinate reduction techniques and tailor the treatment to your needs. We always choose the least invasive option that will effectively relieve your nasal obstruction. Our turbinectomy options include:

  • Injection Turbinate Reduction: A minimally invasive in-clinic treatment where a corticosteroid medication is injected into the turbinate to shrink it. This quick procedure under local anesthesia can reduce turbinate swelling and congestion with little to no downtime. The relief may be temporary (lasting a few months), but it can be very helpful for moderate turbinate enlargement.
  • Coblation Turbinoplasty: A modern technique using controlled radiofrequency energy (coblation) to gently shrink the turbinate tissue. This precise method causes minimal impact on surrounding tissues and can often be performed under local anesthesia right in our clinic. Coblation turbinoplasty typically has a quick recovery and provides significant improvement in nasal breathing.
  • Partial Turbinectomy: Surgical removal of a portion of the turbinate to open up the nasal airway. In a partial turbinectomy, only the excess turbinate tissue is removed, preserving as much normal tissue as possible to maintain nasal function. This procedure is more extensive than the above methods and is done under sedation or general anesthesia at our surgical facility. Partial turbinectomy is highly effective for severe nasal blockage while still keeping your nose’s natural humidifying function intact.
  • Total Turbinectomy: Complete removal of an entire turbinate. This is generally reserved for the most severe cases of turbinate hypertrophy when other methods haven’t provided enough relief. If a total turbinectomy is needed, it’s performed under general anesthesia in a hospital or our day surgery center. We only consider total removal in very extreme situations, since turbinates help humidify air, and our surgeons take special care to ensure your nasal passages stay healthy after the procedure.

Where Is the Procedure Performed? The setting for your turbinectomy depends on how extensive the treatment is. Minor procedures like injection or coblation are done under local anesthesia right in our clinic, and you can go home shortly after. More extensive surgeries (such as partial or total turbinectomy) are performed at our accredited day surgery center or a hospital with the appropriate anesthesia. Even those typically don’t require an overnight stay – you’ll be able to go home the same day once you’ve recovered from anesthesia. Either way, you’ll receive the same high standard of care and personalized attention to ensure a smooth, safe experience.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What are nasal turbinates and why would they need to be reduced?

Nasal turbinates are small, bony structures inside your nose (usually three on each side) that clean, warm, and humidify the air you breathe. If you have chronic nasal irritation – for example from allergies or long-term inflammation – the turbinates can swell or become enlarged (a condition called turbinate hypertrophy). Enlarged turbinates block your nasal passages and make it hard to breathe through your nose. A turbinectomy (turbinate reduction) reduces that excess tissue so air can flow freely again. We only recommend this when turbinates are causing persistent problems like constant congestion or snoring.

Yes. Turbinectomy is generally very safe, especially when performed by an experienced ENT surgeon. As with any procedure there are minor risks (such as bleeding or infection), but serious complications are uncommon. Our surgeons preserve enough of the turbinate tissue to maintain normal nasal moisture and function, which helps prevent excessive dryness. We’ll also give you clear aftercare instructions to help you heal properly. Most patients have a smooth recovery and notice significantly improved breathing once healed.

Recovery time depends on the type of procedure. If you have a minor in-clinic treatment, you might get back to your normal routine within a day or two. For a surgical turbinectomy, plan to rest at home for a few days. You should start breathing easier within the first week as internal swelling goes down. It’s normal to experience some congestion, a bit of bloody discharge, or crusting in the nose during the first week – that’s part of the healing process. We’ll advise you on saline nasal rinses and other care to help you heal. By around two weeks after surgery, most patients feel significantly better and can resume all their usual activities.
