What Is a Root Canal Treatment?

A root canal treatment is a dental procedure to remove infection from inside a tooth and protect it from future harm. Inside each tooth is soft tissue called the pulp, which can become infected due to deep decay, cracks, or injury. During a root canal, our dentist carefully removes the infected pulp, cleans and disinfects the inner canals of the tooth, then fills and seals them. Finally, the tooth is restored (usually with a filling or crown) so that it can function normally again. This treatment stops the pain and infection while allowing you to keep your natural tooth instead of having it pulled out.

Key benefits of root canal treatment:

  • Relieves Pain: A root canal eliminates the source of toothache by removing infected nerve tissue. Most patients feel significant relief once the infection is cleared.
  • Saves Your Natural Tooth: It prevents the need for extraction, so you keep your original tooth structure. This helps maintain your bite alignment and jaw health.
  • Stops Infection Spread: By cleaning out the infection, a root canal prevents bacteria from spreading to the gum, jaw, or other teeth, protecting your overall oral health.
  • Restores Function: After a root canal and proper restoration, your tooth will be strong and functional, allowing you to bite and chew normally without pain.
  • Long-Term Solution: With good care, a tooth that has had a root canal can last many years, often for a lifetime, avoiding more complex dental work down the line.

What to Expect During a Root Canal

Root canal therapy at HealthHub Clinics is straightforward and usually completed in one visit (occasionally two visits for complicated cases). Here’s what happens during the procedure:

  1. Assessment & Anesthesia: Our dentist will examine your tooth and take any needed X-rays to evaluate the infection. Before starting, we apply a local anesthetic to completely numb the tooth and surrounding area – you should only feel pressure, not pain, during the treatment.
  2. Removing the Infection: A small opening is made in the top of the tooth to access the infected pulp. Using fine instruments, the dentist gently removes the diseased pulp tissue and bacteria from within the root canals. You remain comfortable throughout this step thanks to anesthesia.
  3. Cleaning & Sealing the Canals: The now-empty canals are thoroughly cleaned, disinfected, and shaped. We then fill the canals with a rubber-like biocompatible material called gutta-percha, which seals the space to prevent reinfection. The access hole in the tooth is closed with a temporary filling.

Restoration of the Tooth: After a root canal, a final restoration is essential to protect the tooth. In a follow-up appointment (or sometimes the same visit), we will remove the temporary filling and place a permanent restoration. Often this is a dental crown which covers the tooth, restoring its full strength and function. Once the crown or filling is in place, you can use the tooth normally again.

After the procedure: Thanks to our gentle approach, recovery is usually quick. You may feel mild soreness or sensitivity for a couple of days, which is manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers if needed. Most patients return to their normal activities the next day. We advise avoiding chewing on the treated tooth until it’s fully restored with a crown or permanent filling. Our dentist will give you simple aftercare instructions to ensure proper healing.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Does a root canal treatment hurt?

No – modern root canal treatments should not be painful. We use effective local anesthesia to fully numb your tooth, so you won’t feel pain during the procedure. In fact, a root canal actually relieves the pain caused by an infected tooth. You might experience a bit of soreness or sensitivity for a short time after the treatment, but this is usually mild and goes away in a day or

You may need a root canal if you have symptoms of an infected tooth. Common signs include: severe, lingering toothache; sensitivity to hot or cold that lasts even after the stimulus is removed; tenderness or swelling in the gums near a tooth; a pimple-like boil on the gum; or tooth discoloration (a darkening of the tooth). However, not all infections cause obvious pain, which is why regular dental check-ups are important. Our dentist will examine you (often with an X-ray) to determine if the tooth’s pulp is infected and if a root canal is the recommended solution.

Most root canal treatments at our clinics are completed in a single visit lasting about 60 to 90 minutes. In that visit, we remove the infection and seal the tooth. For more severe infections or multi-rooted teeth (like certain molars), a second visit might be needed to ensure the tooth is completely clean before sealing. After the root canal is done, you will also need a final restoration (such as a crown) – this might be done on the same day or in a separate appointment. Your dentist will explain the expected timeline based on your case, but generally you can expect the main treatment to be finished in one session.

In most cases, yes, a crown (cap) is highly recommended after a root canal. Removing the infected pulp can leave the tooth a bit weaker or more brittle than before. A crown covers the tooth to restore its full strength and protect it from cracking or reinfection. If the treated tooth is a back tooth (molar) or had extensive decay, a crown is especially important because these teeth endure heavy chewing forces. For front teeth, sometimes a simple filling may suffice if enough tooth structure remains, but often a crown is still the best way to ensure long-term success. Your dentist will advise the ideal restoration for your tooth. Once the crown is placed, your tooth will look and function just like a healthy natural tooth.

Ignoring an infected tooth or delaying a needed root canal is risky. The infection can spread deeper into the tooth root and even into the jaw or bloodstream, potentially forming a painful abscess (pus-filled infection) and causing swelling. Over time, the tooth will likely die and need to be extracted if not treated. Pulling the tooth removes the immediate source of infection, but then you will have a missing tooth that may require a bridge or implant to replace. It’s usually best to save the natural tooth with a root canal if possible – this stops the infection and spares you the complications of tooth loss. Prompt treatment means less pain, less damage, and a better outcome for your oral health.
