Have you been diagnosed with carotid artery disease?
Diagnosing carotid artery disease begins with a medical history and physical exam. A doctor will listen to the neck arteries for a bruit (a whooshing sound) that may indicate turbulent blood flow. Key diagnostic tests include:
- Carotid Doppler Ultrasound: A painless test using sound waves to visualize plaque and measure blood flow in the carotid arteries.
- CT Angiography (CTA): A specialized CT scan with contrast dye to get detailed images of the neck arteries.
- MR Angiography (MRA): An MRI technique that maps blood vessels without X-ray radiation.
We also check cholesterol, blood sugar, and other factors that contribute to atherosclerosis. In our Dubai clinic, we use high-resolution imaging and expert analysis to identify carotid blockages quickly. Early diagnosis lets us choose the best approach to improve blood flow and reduce stroke risk.
Have you received treatment for carotid artery disease?
Treatment focuses on reducing stroke risk by restoring healthy blood flow. We start with conservative measures:
- Lifestyle changes: A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins (limiting saturated fats, salt, and sugar). Regular exercise (such as 30 minutes of walking most days), weight management, and quitting smoking all improve vascular health.
- Medications: Antiplatelet drugs (like aspirin or clopidogrel) to prevent clots, statins to lower cholesterol, and medicines to control blood pressure and diabetes.
- Monitoring: Mild to moderate narrowing may be monitored with periodic carotid ultrasounds and checkups, adjusting treatment as needed.
For significant blockages, we use advanced procedures as mentioned next.
Have you undergone carotid endarterectomy?
Carotid endarterectomy is surgery to remove plaque from the artery. It’s recommended for patients with severe narrowing (typically >70%) or after a TIA/stroke. The surgeon makes a small incision in the neck, opens the carotid artery, and removes the fatty deposits. The artery is then closed with fine sutures. This surgery greatly lowers the risk of stroke. Patients usually stay in the hospital 1–2 days and return to most activities within a few weeks. Our vascular surgeons perform this operation with advanced techniques and monitoring to maximize safety and success.
Have you undergone carotid endarterectomy?
Carotid artery stenting is a minimally invasive alternative, ideal for patients who may not tolerate open surgery. A small catheter is inserted (usually through an artery in the groin) and guided to the blocked carotid artery. A tiny balloon is inflated to open the blockage, and a metal mesh stent is placed to hold the artery open. After stenting, patients often stay in the hospital only 1 day and recover faster than with surgery. Blood-thinning medications (antiplatelets) are prescribed for a period afterward to keep the artery open. Our Dubai vascular specialists use cutting-edge imaging and protection devices during stenting to minimize stroke risk.
